Underwhelming. Fine for brush cleaning but horrible for hair.
For hairwashing purposes it is hideous. Fine on scalps and gentle on eyes but leaves my hair straw-like and, as another reviewer remarked, like Barbie doll hair (same with my daughter's perfect condition, undamaged, untreated hair). Not nice. So I marked it down on that because it is sold primarily as a shampoo.
It works fine as a brush cleaner and the cheap bottle will last a long time, so it represents very good value if used for that and is super cheap when compared to branded products specifically sold as brush cleaners.
Marks gained based on performance, price and how long it will last brush cleaning, price when used as a brush cleaner, but lost from it simply not performing at all well in it's primary function

I use this as a pre-cleanser befiore using Clinique soap. It removes all my makeup, leaving my skin cleansed of dirt etc ready for the Clinique soap. My face doesnt feel tight using it at all!
I did notice that a year or so ago when I was using it as a facial wash my skin ended up very inflamed after a week or so, which is why i now follow it up with the clinique and so fat, no issuees, just clean smooth baby soft skin :)

I love the smell of this stuff! I use it to wash my hair as I had glue in extensions so needed something gentle. I don't have those extensions any more but still continue to use the shampoo as I do feel like it doesn't irritate my scalp as much as other shampoos.
My mother loves this stuff as well to wash her hair with as her hair goes flat quickly living in Florida with the humidity. I am based in the UK where it's available widely.
The best use: washing and cleaning my make up brushes! I used boiling hot water once and of course this ruined the glue and the brush was ruined until I fixed it with super glue - phew! So note to self - use tepid water when cleaning brushes. It's amazing on my foundation brush although it hasn't restored the white completely on the brush but it cleans it well enough for me to be impressed.
I tried to wash my face using this once but wow did it dry my skin out! Yuck! Perhaps I should have watered it down but I'll stick to my avocado oil and other oils for cleansing my face.

I LOVE IT ! I keep my natural hair color so I don't need a repairing kind of shampoo. It softly cleans your hair and give a healthy shine. I dont need a conditioner even though my hair is shoulder length. I also use it to clean my brushes. The smell is heavenly..

I use this for so many things. It cleans my brushes amazingly well. I use it once a month as a clarifying shampoo. It strips my hair of all of the nasty buildup from my usual shampoo and styling routine. I also use it to wash my face. It can be used to wash delicates as well. It smells awesome and really is universal. I use the Target Up and Up brand.

Like a lot of people here, I use this primarily to clean my makeup brushes. It works very well and it pretty cheap. I use to remove the makeup with olive oil first, but I realized I don't need to. Sometimes I'll just need to wash a brush twice (like a foundation brush). If I don't have a coupon or it's not on sale, I'll buy the generic brand. I have used this to wash my hair and I think it works pretty well to clean my hair too.

I confess I never knew how useful baby shampoo was, but boy, have my eyes been opened.
A few weeks ago I had some eye inflammation and the doctor told me to wash around the eyes with baby shampoo. I ran to Dollar Tree and picked up the "Sesame Street" Brand Baby Shampoo, figuring it would suck, and knowing it would go to waste.
Well. Having recently fallen upon hard times (read: dirt poor), I was using Ivory Soap to wash my sensitive skin and it was drying it out like nothing else. I looked around and saw the baby shampoo and decided to use it for my face. I was so surprised by how nice my skin looked and felt after washing with this. I've been using it ever since, and have had less hormonal acne. My face actually looks way better than it usually looks. It kind of glows. (I do moisturize immediately after use, of course.) My wrinkles and lines are alot less pronounced as well. I'm happy I stumbled upon this. I have also used it a clarifying shampoo, body wash, dog shampoo, to wash brushes, remove eye makeup, and wash delicates. Great stuffm will always have on hand.

love this product!! this is a gentle and effective cleanser for my acne prone skin. In addition with mia clarisonic has made a real difference in my skin for good.
Love this cleanser, it actually removes mascara and make up better than the expensive products and doesnt sting in your eyes!!. Recommend it to everybody.
baby shampoo can be use for multiple purpose, my husband for his hair in the shower, I clean up my face, and my little baby uses as shampoo and shower gel....
great product!

* I'm reviewing this product as a makeup remover and brush cleanser.
Update: I decided to try this again after I started experiencing flaking and irritation from my other removal attempts. Instead of using it with a washcloth or cotton pad however I am simply rubbing the mixture into my skin with my finger until I feel that the makeup has been broken down and then rinse with my finger and pat dry. I've also changed the ratio from 1:8 shampoo:water to 1:4, which seems to be proving far more effective and oddly enough gentler on the skin. It's been only a few days of trial, and one of those days I did use a washcloth to rinse, so I'll give it another week or two of full trial to see how my skin responds. But so far so good - I haven't noticed any oiliness like I previously did and my flaking that I was experiencing with my other removal methods is going away, almost entirely gone now :) So stay tuned!

What it Claims:
"Johnson's Baby Shampoo is as gentle to eyes as pure water. Johnson's Baby Shampoo is made from a very special combination of ingredients designed not to irritate delicate skin or eyes. It rinses easily and leaves hair smelling fresh and looking shiny and healthy. Johnson's Baby Shampoo is soap free, hypoallergenic, and dermatologist tested."

Claims - True or False?
1) Gentle to eyes: True
2) Does not irritate skin and eyes: Mostly true.
3) Rinses easily: True.
4) Hair smells fresh, looks shiny and healthy: Undetermined (did not test as shampoo).

Packaging:
This shampoo comes in a very simple clear plastic bottle. It's wide and slender. While it fits in the hand with comfort it is kind of large. On the bottle there are two label stickers; the sticker on the back provides all the ingredients. The cap is a hard plastic with a press-down lid. I find it a bit hard to open as it does seem to take some force and does almost stick a bit - perhaps a feature added on purpose, since it is meant to be used with children and one would not want a child to get into the product. The plastic of the bottle is hard but does not require any significant amount of force to squeeze.

Smell:
This is a very clean scent, and I can't really describe what it reminds me of specifically. I'd say it's almost fruity or flowery. It's also quite strong, so I'd assume that it would likely leave the hair smelling fresh and clean for quite a while. It does linger on my skin as well.

Formula:
Johnson's baby shampoo is a clear yellow-coloured formula. It's not overly runny which makes it fairly easy to work with. Just a small amount of it creates a nice lather. For my use with the shampoo I diluted it 1:8 in water and its cleaning power was still excellent and quick. It does feel a bit slimy on the skin when it's being used but it does rinse off completely without leaving any residue behind. I decided to try this out for eye makeup removal and it worked better than any expensive remover I've tried. However, it was a bit irritating to use with the cotton pad and the next morning my eyes were much more oily than they have been since I stopped using skincare products. It did not sting when I used it, but it definitely takes some getting used to. I found that it left my eye area a bit dry maybe, but no different than when I'd use makeup removers. I've also tried it with my makeup brushes, and in this I found it to be a fantastic product. Using the diluted solution I squirted some onto my brushes and worked it in, then wiped. Cleaned away all excess colour and sparkle.

Bang for your Buck:
I paid around $4CAD for this 444ml bottle. This is very well priced for the amount received because only a small amount of product is needed to get the job done. I can easily see this one bottle lasting 6-12 months if used for facial or hair hygiene purposes, and even longer if simply used for eye makeup removal or cleansing one's brushes.

Final Consensus:
While I don't love it for makeup removal, which was the original reason I bought it, I absolutely love it for cleansing my makeup brushes. It really does work very well at removing eye makeup though. I will continue to use the diluted solution for my brushes and will give this a go for removing eye products that stain or for darker lipsticks if needed. I'd personally not try it as a facial cleanser or on my hair based on the results I experienced on my eye area.

Much better than Philosophy Purity to clean makeup brushes! I can actually see the white bristles again on my Sigma F84 foundation brush but still doesn't seem to completely remove all of it, so I give a final rinse w/ my MAC cleanser.

I don't know if I used it wrong or what, but I shampooed my hair with this tonight, and good heavens, my hair feels so weird. It feels like there is residue on my hair and somehow it makes my hair feel like weird doll hair. Not gonna use this again on my hair, but I'll use it on my makeup brushes.

I love this shampoo! I know some other reviews have said it turns their hair to straw but I've never experienced that. I have thick and coarse asian hair though and I think it could be harsher on those with fine hair.
I first do a quick shampoo with Dove shampoo to 'prime' my hair for this. Unless I do that I tend to leave the baby shampoo in for longer and that will strip my hair (but still not straw-like). Using only the Dove will result in an oily feeling scalp for me after a day of no shampooing. (I do shampoo everyday, despite what my stylist recommends, but as a student there are those days when you just don't have the time....) The baby shampoo is the only one I've found so far that is gentle enough to use everyday and doesn't dry out my scalp to trigger the dandruff I get otherwise, and is cleansing enough to let me skip a day of shampoo if needed. I follow-up with the Dove conditioner on the tips of my hair working up to my roots (long mid-back hair) In all this helps me keep my hair soft, shiny, dandruff-free, and keeps my waves non-frizzy. (Well, Aussie works too, but this is marginally cheaper and easier to find.)
I haven't tried it as a face wash, so I can't attest to that, but using it as a brush cleanser for me is only OK, I think it might be a bit harsh on synthetic hairs, I don't have any natural hair brushes to compare. I prefer swirling my brushes onto a bar of soap, or using softsoap.

Nice product. Great as a gentle shampoo. Sometimes use it to wash makeup brushes. Can't really fault it. It's a little runny.

My skin situation over the past 6 months has been unfolding drama.
I got on the organic / natural bandwagon and started using Dr. Hauschka products and experienced the worst breakout along my chin that I have ever had. Now don get me wrong Ive seen people who use the line and have amazing skin, but Dr. H. was not for me.
So after that I moved on to proactive to try and clear up the flare ups, it helped, but similar to my teens experience with proactive it stopped working.
I remember my mom saying to me "why dont you stop with all the products." I mean this had never dawned on me. so I did. The only thing I used to wash my face was j&j baby shampoo and my face was completely clear in 2 weeks. Every morning and evening use it to wash my face and my face has never looked better. Sometimes less is more with sensitive acne-prone skin and a little j&j to cleanse the face, obviously. continued >>

This product is a classic. Who wouldn't recognize the signature scent?
My main use for this is as a brush cleaner, and it works well for that purpose, as it cleans gently (no harsh surfactants in this product).
I would recommend this, since it's easily available (in the U.S., that is), and relatively inexpensive.

I used this shampoo through my entire childhood and it left my hair very clean and it is very gentle. Gets rid of all the dirt and build up.
I now use it to clean my brushes and I LOVE it. Gets them clean and strips all the makeup. Leaves my brushes smooth, soft and CLEAN.
I bought a travel sized bottle and clean my brushes after every use and I'm not even 1/3 through it yet. (I've had it for two months or so.)
You need such a small amount and it does so much!
Will always repurchase and might even start using it on my own hair again to really give it a good cleaning.
